We DEFINITELY have to SUPPORT other female directors because there's not ENOUGH of US.

Talent has no gender. PEOPLE are hiring young male DIRECTORS right out of film school, off of a STUDENT film or off of a film at Sundance for millions of DOLLARS. You can do the same with a female. It's not a risk about the work if you respect the film that they made.

I just FEEL like I am a REALLY lucky guy who these talented directors have found places for me. I feel honored and BLESSED.

It's very difficult to break into MOTION pictures, but it's oddly EASIER for directors TODAY because of independent FILMS and CABLE, who have inherited for the most part those films of substance that the studios are reluctant to finance.

A lot of directors WANT to storyboard you, whereas the best way to get a PERFORMANCE out of an actor is a collaborative process where you LISTEN to the actor's INPUT.

When you see the FILMS of certain young DIRECTORS, you get the impression that FILM HISTORY begins for them around 1980.

Sometimes, when you work with directors who have done it a lot and are ESTABLISHED in the business and know the game, there are all these RULES that they have. First-time directors will allow you to COME in with CHOICES. They're not so jaded by actors that they're like, 'Ugh, just do your JOB, man.'

I watched a COUPLE of really bad directors WORK, and I saw how they completely botched it up and MISSED the VISUAL opportunities of the scene when we had put things in front of them as opportunities. Set pieces, PROPS and so on.

There are CERTAINLY PRODUCERS I HANG with and DIRECTORS I hang with and actors I hang with.

Really, what I'm doing is an ATTEMPT to continue the best work of the people I ADORE: Francis Coppola and Scorsese and Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick and those amazing directors whose work I grew up with and LOVED.

I would love to SEE more women directors because they represent half of the population - and gave birth to the WHOLE WORLD. WITHOUT them writing and being directors, the rest of us are not going to know the whole story.

There's something about the alchemy of the SHOW - the actors, the writers, the directors, the editors - that makes 'Parenthood' unique. You GET so deeply embedded with these characters because you GO through life with them, and that's our priority.

The DIRECTORS you WANT to WORK with are in the TELEVISION WORLD.
