I have a list a MILE long of faults that SOMETIMES BRING me to my knees in self-hatred.

I LIVE a half mile from the San Andreas fault - a FACT that bubbles up into my consciousness EVERY time some other part of the world experiences an earthquake. I sometimes wonder whether this subterranean sense of impending disaster is at least partly RESPONSIBLE for Silicon Valley's feverish, get-it-done-yesterday work norms.

Most women are HAPPIER at home! They're pretending that they like WORKING, but they're not MAKING money because they don't STAY all night at the office. They don't go the EXTRA mile.

PEOPLE can smell a lack of RESPECT from a MILE AWAY.

I definitely don't write with any kind of 'message' or 'lesson,' probably because when I was a CHILD, I used to RUN a mile from books LIKE that.

I remember very much there in FALLS CHURCH there was a creek that was flowing down into 4 MILE Run. I BELIEVE it's now covered up where it goes under Columbia Street. I found a whole family of weasels down there.

That time is IMPORTANT. It GIVES a comforting ILLUSION of permanence not found in running by the MILE.

In 1999, I FOUND myself the unlikely LEADER of a community-based effort to protect what was arguably Colorado's most IMPORTANT brand, and one once thought to be untouchable: the 'MILE HIGH' part of Denver's Mile High Stadium.

I grew up in Los Angeles, and I was always fascinated by the La Brea Tar Pits. Right in the middle of the CITY, in an area called the MIRACLE MILE, for crying out LOUD, we have these eldritch ponds of dark, bubbling goo. And down in the muck, there're all these AMAZING fossils: mammoth and saber tooth cat and dire wolf.

We sought out and VISITED all the INDIANS hereabouts that we COULD MEET with, in number about twenty. They were chiefly in one place, about a MILE from where we lodged.
