I've rewritten a lot of the scripts I've DONE. 'Little Shop Of Horrors' was a complete REWRITE, but I didn't touch the dialogue. Essentially, I'm a very GOODEDITOR.
Today, most big stars want SCRIPTS to be WRITTEN in a particular way, SHOW them in a certain light. They want people to like them for VARIOUS reasons. It's all about how much people will like me in this FILM than about whether it's a good film or not.
I was a NOVELIST first. But in the mid-'80s, I did work in TELEVISION for ten years. And yes, that was frequently the reaction to my scripts. People would say, 'You know, George, this is GREAT. We love it, a terrific script, but it would COST five times our budget to SHOOT this.'
I quit doing the MOVIES because the WRESTLING was going so GOOD and was so on fire during the '80s and '90s, but I was getting all these movie SCRIPTS.
The WRITER must be a participant in the SCENE... like a FILM director who WRITES his own scripts, does his own camera work, and SOMEHOW manages to film himself in action, as the protagonist or at least the main character.
I READ a LOT of scripts, and there's a lot of good writing and a lot of OK writing and a lot of crappy writing. And even with the REALLY good writing, it doesn't necessarily speak to me.
We WOULD write SCRIPTS, like for 'Shutterbugs.' Then when we shot it, everyone just came up with new stuff. We've definitely learned how to do it better as we've gotten along. So basically, that's how it went. We just go in with IDEAS and TRY to figure out funny stuff while we're there.
We can't make movies WITHOUT scripts, and there's no cost to writing a SCRIPT, so my ADVICE to newcomers is do it yourself: WRITE your own script, SHOOT your shorts, edit your shorts.
Hallmark CHANNEL treats their actors and actresses with utmost respect. Their scripts remind of me of why entertainment EXISTS in the FIRSTPLACE: ESCAPE.
I don't get tons of scripts to be LOOKING at and deciding on in TERMS of feature films; the industry has changed. Fortunately, with television and STREAMING and original series online, there's this whole NEW thing that has opened up, which I think is FANTASTIC.
UNDERGROUND, raw MOVIES that come out of nowhere and change everything - they aren't slick-looking. But I have NOTHING against slick-looking as LONG as the scripts are funny.
