I THINK if we are at a WAR with an enemy COUNTRY, that country is responsible for our SOLDIERS' deaths.

Whenever I look at pictures of HORRIFIC things that soldiers do or that have been done to soldiers I always feel sorry for everybody involved because POLITICS THROWS them into these horrific SITUATIONS where really it's just 18-year-old KIDS.

No matter what you think about the IRAQ war, there is one thing we can all AGREE on for the next DAYS - we have to salute the courage and bravery of those who are risking their lives to vote and those brave Iraqi and American soldiers fighting to PROTECT their right to vote.

I took every CHANCE I COULD to meet with U.S. soldiers. I talked with them and read the books they GAVE me about the war. I decided I needed to RETURN to my country and join with them - active duty soldiers and Vietnam Veterans in particular - to try and END the war.

My very first recollection of life on earth was WAKING up in BED with my mother, and she was showing me a PICTURE of my father, Charles Jackson, with a GROUP of soldiers.

Even soldiers from the Vietnam WAR had said that when they were FIGHTING in that war, the landmine was just one of any number of weapons to USE in the fighting. It wasn't until they began to think about the aftermath and the LEGACY of landmines that they recognized the long-term, indiscriminate impact of the WEAPON.

Of COURSE, I THINK it is legitimate for the Commander-in-Chief to be CONCERNED for the safety of his SOLDIERS.

This WAR is being PLAYED in the REALM of public OPINION and has dire consequences for our soldiers in Iraq, the future of our country, and freedom AROUND the world.

If you need to do a MOVIE where you have an army of 10,000 soldiers, that's a very difficult thing to shoot for real. It's very expensive, but as computer graphics techniques MAKE that cheaper, it'll be more possible to make PICTURES on an EPIC SCALE, which we haven't really seen since the '50s and '60s.

America has ALSO FOREVER lost the service of thousands of good soldiers who are now disabled as a RESULT of BATTLE wounds in Iraq. Many others will need mental and emotional rehabilitation before they can return to normal life.

I was in the Army in the 1960s. I didn't go to Vietnam. I went to Germany, where I DRANK BEER. But I did have an empathy with the soldiers in Vietnam.

In some ways, the BEST novel about TERRORISM, though it's not a novel, is 'The Looming Tower' by Lawrence Wright or 'Perfect SOLDIERS' by TERRY McDermott.
